Find Your Point of Balance, YOUR VIBRATIONS Vol. 1, No. 1 - 8.07

Hello!

I am always excited when I learn about a new technique or hear a tip that helps me find a deeper sense of peace and joy, and so I am writing to share with you one of the wonderful "discoveries" I have made through Reiki, the tanden.

The tanden in Japan, or Tan Tien in China, is recognized throughout the Eastern world as the body's point of balance. It is an energy center located approximately three finger-widths below the navel and two finger-widths back, and is about the size of a small grapefruit. In the chakra system, it is compared to the second or navel chakra. The tanden is the place where our life energy concentrates, the center of our ki.

Keeping awareness of the tanden is a great way to help the flow of our life energy. This is one of the goals and effects of Reiki, and the great thing is that you can do this without having to get any training or attunements or spending lots of time in meditation! All you need is to "find" your tanden, and then gently, without willfully concentrating on it, just keep your awareness there. For me, this causes a physical sensation of energy running up my spine and past my head, which makes me feel centered, aligned with my Highest Self. That's a surefire way to feel peace!

So, for finding the tanden, Don Beckett in the first book of his trilogy Explorations into Usui Reiki and Beyond (which can be found at www.Johreiki.net suggests the following:

Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, pelvis forward, arms hanging loosely. Tuck the chin slightly inward. Holding the tip of your tongue on the roof of the mouth, just behind the teeth, inhale through the nose, down into the abdomen. Exhale through the mouth, letting the tongue drop down naturally. Take a few breaths, relax the body and, feeling as balanced as possible, focus your attention below the navel. Then move your body, very slowly, either slightly upward (by raising straight up on the toes) or slightly downward (by bending the knees). This will help you feel a sensation in the tanden.

Once you find it, you can keep it in your awareness, or, if you are so inclined, you can meditate on it, drawing your breath there (breathe with your belly instead of your lungs), visualizing white light gathering there and then flowing out to the rest of your body, or a meditation that you make up! Also, many Buddhist and martial arts traditions have special meditations for the tanden.

If you are looking for new ways to feel yourself align with your highest self or just feel yourself fill with peace, then try finding your tanden! And then, please share your experiences with me!

Wishing you peace and joy,
Andrea
