Balance Your 1st Chakra, YOUR VIBRATIONS Vol. 1, No. 3 - 10.23.07

Hello!

As I mentioned in the last newsletter, the chakras are the energetic centers of our body. Even though the chakra system is not traditionally part of the Reiki system, they work well together because illness and energetic blockage in the body are frequently related to one of the chakras. If we know the chakra that is blocked, we have a good idea of what actions and thoughts can help us heal. A chakra's good health also depends on that of its neighboring chakras because it feeds from the one below it and, by the same token, feeds the one above it. Since we already looked at the second chakra, today we'll look at the first or base chakra.

Physically, the base chakra is found in the area between the genitals and the anus and affects the bones, legs, knees and feet, the large intestine, anus and adrenal glands (that produce adrenalin when under stress, regulating the fight or flight mechanism). This chakra connects our spirit with the planet, grounding us in the physical world. Its traditional color is red and it rules our material needs and all our basic needs for survival. Our level of attachment to life and our commitment to enjoying it depend greatly on this chakra's balance.

If this area is blocked, we can feel rootless, not only on the physical plane, but also on the spiritual one. Consequently, depression is also a sign of blockages here. If the chakra is not very active, we can feel apathy and our emotional and physical resources can become exhausted. If the chakra is too active, we live with constant stress, feeling insecurity and trying to protect ourselves and hoard resources.

If, on the other hand, energy flows freely through this area, we feel rooted, secure, stable and calm in the knowledge that we have all that we need to experience a satisfying life. Our desire to explore our potential in life is also awakened. With a clear and balanced first chakra, we have the foundation to dedicate ourselves to developing our joy, wellbeing and creativity.

Ambika Wauters, in her book Healing with the Energy of the Chakras, suggests the following exercise to open the base chakra: Stand with your feet approximately one foot apart. Push up on your toes and, bending your knees, slap your heels against the floor, letting your breath out noisily. Repeat numerous times, emphasizing the down movement of your heels towards the floor.

The following are a few affirmations that promote balance in this chakra:

I am safe and secure at all times.

I am willing to release all old patterns of fear and insecurity to live in joy and wellbeing, now!

I am responsible for the quality of my life.

    Life is good.

I have a right to be myself, just exactly as I am.

I can feel pleasure without painful consequences.

I trust that the process of my life unfolds for my greatest joy and wellbeing.

I love my life just as it is. I am free to make any changes needed for my future.

I can risk doing what I feel is right.

On to clearing and balancing your base chakra!

Wishing you peace and joy,
Andrea
