Reiju
Reiki, and the way it has been transmitted, has changed over the years. When it was introduced to the West, it became "westernized," better adapted to the lifestyle and expectations of western learners. For example, a systematic treatment was devised and reliance on intuition de-emphasized. Another big change was the way it was transmitted. When Reiki was founded, students lived with their Masters and received teachings on a daily basis. Mikao Usui, Reiki's founder, did not attune his students the way westerners are attuned to Reiki. Instead, he performed an empowerment called Reiju, which temporarily empowers the student to channel Reiki. Mikao Usui used this procedure with his students regularly, on an ongoing basis. They became familiar with the energy, learned to work with it, and over time became capable of channeling the energy more permanently. Our western lifestlyle does not facilitate this kind of learning process, so attunements may be better suited to us. But, if you are interested in learning about Reiki, and don't necessarily want to become attuned, Reiju is a fantastic way to acquaint yourself with the energy and learn how it works.
